Lisle Band tunes up for 29th season of concerts in the park

Lisle Community Band invites music lovers to bring a lawn chair, sit back and enjoy its 29th season of concerts in the park.

The season starts with a salute to American and patriotic music at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 25, and continues at the same time every Thursday through July 30 (except July 2) at the stage in Community Park, 1825 Short St., Lisle. The last concert of the season is performed by the Lisle Community Jazz Band.

Admission to all concerts is free and refreshments are for sale. In case of rain or extreme heat, concerts are in the Lisle High School auditorium.

The band of about 60 high school and college students, adults and retired citizens from Lisle and the surrounding communities has been providing free concerts since 1987. Founded by director Steven Green, the band began as an adult band performance opportunity for alumni and parents of students at Lisle High School with one concert during the summer. The band now gives four summer concerts plus the jazz band concert, marches in Lisle's July 4 Parade and performs during the Lights of Lisle holiday celebration in December.

This season's concerts offer a variety of music including classical, traditional band music, Broadway, movie and TV themes, marches, and patriotic music. The concerts are as follows:

• June 25: American Music and Patriotic Salute of marches, "Porgy and Bess," and "Big Band Spectacular" medley.

• July 9: Trip Across the USA, including "St. Louis Blues," "Chicago Medley," "Hawaii Five-O," "Oklahoma" and a Hollywood medley.

• July 16: Use Your Imagination, with music from "Night on Bald Mountain," "Carnival Overture," "Sorcerer's Apprentice," "Who's That Masked Man," "Cartoon Express" and "Aladdin."

• July 23: Fun Favorites, including "Capriccio Espagnol," "The Sound of Music," and "The King and I" with saxophone soloist Scott Gumina.

• July 30: Lisle Community Jazz Band, featuring music of the big bands.
