Four injured in Aurora crash

An Aurora mother and son remain in critical condition Wednesday evening after a crash that morning left them submerged in a retention pond inside their SUV for more than a half an hour, Aurora police say.

Another child, a seven-year-old girl, was rescued from the water by Aurora police following the crash that happened just before 5 a.m. on Edgelawn Drive just north of Sullivan Road, said Dan Ferrelli, spokesman for the Aurora Police Department.

He said the 2003 GMC Envoy driven by the woman, 31, and carrying the two children was exiting an industrial parking lot, 1700 N. Edgelawn, traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when it hit a Scion sedan driven by a 35-year-old Aurora man. The driver of the Scion was heading northbound on Edgelawn and waiting to turn into the same parking lot.

The SUV then left the roadway and continued eastbound and ended up in the retention pond. The vehicle was almost completely submerged when police arrived and found the little girl trying to stay afloat in the water, police said.

The Aurora Fire Department Dive Team pulled the boy, 9, from the vehicle just before 5:30 a.m. and the mother at 5:40 a.m., police said.

All four people were taken to area hospitals. The little girl and the Scion driver were treated for non life threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed it is asked to call Aurora Police Traffic investigators at (630) 256-5330.
