Woman admits stealing jewelry from Hoffman Estates nursing home resident

A former employee of a Hoffman Estates nursing home pleaded guilty to stealing jewelry from an elderly resident who suffers from dementia.

Bria Abrams, 21, of Carpentersville was sentenced Friday to 75 days in jail and two years probation in exchange for her guilty plea to the class 3 felony. Court records show Abrams was ordered to pay $379 in fines.

Allegations against the former nursing assistant at the Alden Poplar Creek nursing home surfaced in January when the daughter of an 83-year-old resident noticed her mother's wedding jewelry was missing, prosecutors said.

Hoffman Estates police learned that Abrams had recently pawned jewelry worth about $4,200 that matched the description of the missing items, prosecutors said.

Abrams, who was convicted of theft in 2014 and 2012, admitted stealing the items "due to financial hardship," prosecutors said.
