Dundees celebrate Old Glory on Flag Day

Veterans, active military personnel, students and others gathered Sunday at the Dundee Township Visitor's Center, aka The Depot, in downtown East Dundee to pay tribute to Old Glory.

The Flag Day ceremony hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2298 Auxiliary featured the retiring of an old United States flag, performances by the Allegiance Color Guard and the singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Flag Day commemorates the official adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official U.S. flag on June 14, 1777, by the Second Continental Congress. Although not an official federal holiday, June 14 was proclaimed Flag Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress in 1949.
