Freedom pounds Boomers in 16-6 loss
The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers fell behind 10-0 and could not recover in a 16-6 loss to the Florence Freedom on Saturday night.
Florence hit 5 homers in the game, the most allowed in a single game in Boomer history. Gaby Juarbe hit a 3-run homer in the first to set the tone. Scott Plaza lasted just three innings in the game, surrendering 9 runs. Florence scored in six different innings.
Schaumburg attempted to rally, tallying 6 unanswered to battle within 10-6. Mike Schulze notched an RBI double in the fifth. Jordan Dean drove home a run and Steve McQuail nailed a 2-run homer in the frame. Dean singled home 2 in the sixth, but Florence tacked on 6 more to pull away. Schulze, Dean, and Joel Hutter logged 2 hits each in the game as the Boomers finished with nine. Dean drove home 3 runs. Hideyoshi Otake was the only pitcher who did not allow a run, tossing a perfect eighth.
The Boomers (11-15) conclude the series with the Freedom at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday. Right-hander Eddie Cody (4-0, 1.06) is scheduled to start for Schaumburg against RHP Chuck Weaver (2-1, 3.13).
