Barrington grad sentenced to 18 years for New York murder

A Barrington High School graduate was sentenced yesterday to 18 years in prison for the strangulation of a young woman he met near a park in New York two years ago. Maxwell Sherman, 20, pleaded guilty in April to a charge of second-degree murder in the strangulation and beating death of 18-year-old Long Island native Lauren Daverin in August 2013, according to a release from the Nassau County district attorney's office. Storm could bring 4 inches of rain in isolated spots

A flash flood watch remains in effect in the suburbs as waves of showers and isolated thunderstorms hit through midmorning today, the National Weather Service says. Some of the thunderstorms will produce very heavy rain, with up to 2 to 3 inches in isolated locations in a short period of time, the weather service says. Full story.

Report: Top COD officials didn't know about employee's criminal past

High-ranking College of DuPage officials were not immediately made aware of the criminal history of a former part-time employee charged with stealing more than $100,000 from the campus radio station over seven years, according to a report by a law firm hired to conduct an internal probe at the school. Huntley doctor, police disagree on if he was helping or hurting patient

Internist Moshe Zamir says Huntley responders owe him an apology after police handcuffed him to keep him from treating his patient at the scene of a golf cart accident in Sun City-Huntley. Judge who donated to Hastert to stay on case

Prosecutors and lawyers for Hastert filed paperwork yesterday saying they're willing to have U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin remain on the case. “We are willing to proceed with Judge Durkin presiding,” wrote defense attorneys Thomas Green and John Gallo in a letter to Thomas G. Bruton, clerk of the Northern Illinois U.S. District Court. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Steven Block and Carrie Hamilton expressed similar sentiments in their letter to the clerk. Full story.

South Barrington officials are ready to show off the results of a $3.3 million project that modernized and more than doubled the size of their 31-year-old village hall. Village President Paula McCombie said much of the credit for the project belongs to William “Bill” Rose, who helped found the village in 1957 and stayed active in the community for decades. Miguel Montero hit a 3-run homer in the first inning last night, and the Cubs held on for a 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field. The home run was Montero's eighth of the season. After cold start, Abreu starting to heat up

Jose Abreu came out swinging last season and never really slowed down. En route to being unanimously voted the American League Rookie of the Year, the White Sox' 27-year-old first baseman batted .317 and had 36 home runs and 107 RBI.
