Cook County jail inmate charged with punching officer

A Cook County jail detainee has been charged with punching a corrections officer multiple times in the head, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today. Samuel Salas, 25, is accused of attacking the officer June 4 on his way to court. The officer was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries at an area hospital and released.

Salas was charged on Sunday with aggravated battery to a peace officer. He received a $75,000 bond for that charge during a court hearing on Monday at the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building. Salas was originally booked at the jail in January 2014 on multiple charges, including murder.
