Elk Grove man charged with restaurant burglaries

An Elk Grove Village man charged with a series of restaurant burglaries late last year was ordered held on $75,000 bail Thursday.

Prosecutors say Alexander Clancy, 25, and another man, who has not yet been charged, participated in three late-night burglaries beginning Oct. 20, 2014. On that day, according to Cook County assistant state's attorney David Shin, Clancy and another man broke the front window of a Subway on the 2800 block of Touhy Avenue in Elk Grove Village and carted off a safe containing an unknown amount of cash, Shin said.

A witness driving by at the time told authorities he noticed a broken window and a man forcing a car door closed, Shin said.

Shin said the men also broke the front window of a Little Caesar's Pizza on the 800 block of South Arlington Heights Road and removed a safe left in the parking lot. That burglary occurred either late on Oct. 21 or early on Oct. 22, Shin said.

In the third burglary, video surveillance showed Clancy and the other man breaking into Pete's-a-Pie on the 500 block of East Devon Avenue overnight Nov. 14-15 and taking a cash register containing $100, Shin said.

During their investigation, Elk Grove Village police learned Wood Dale police had arrested someone for a similar series of burglaries last year, Shin said. Detectives spoke to Clancy, who authorities say made statements admitting he drove the other man to the restaurants for the purpose of burglarizing them and splitting the proceeds.

Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo ordered Clancy held on $25,000 bail for each charge, Shin said.

In April, Clancy pleaded guilty to two 2014 burglaries in DuPage County and was sentenced to two years probation and 364 days in jail. In 2010, he received conditional discharge for a misdemeanor attempt to obstruct justice. That same year Clancy received supervision for driving on a suspended license, Shin said.

He next appears in court on July 2.
