Reel life: 'Blue Velvet' gets midnight showing

Film critics notebook:

• It made my top three movies of the 1980s decade, but earned nothing but contempt and a one-star review from an upset Roger Ebert.

David Lynch's controversial 1986 “Blue Velvet,” starring Isabella Rossellini, Kyle MacLachlan, Dennis Hopper and Laura Dern, will be shown on the silver screen at midnight Saturday, June 12, at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., Chicago.

The Music Box lounge will showcase Lynch-themed art work, baked goods, photo ops and drink specials. You can also chat with “Blue Velvet” characters. Go to musicboxtheatre.com.

• The Chicago Film Critics Association resumes its movie and discussion series “MBT Talks” at the Music Box Theatre starting with Guy Pearce and Cobie Smulders in “Results,” at 5:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. on Friday, June 12. CFCA member Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com and FilmAutonomy.com will lead the discussion.
