Oak Grove students celebrate last day
Instead of taking a test or writing an essay, Oak Grove School students spent the last day of academic year playing games and having fun.
As part of the Green Oak's school's annual "Picnic Day" event, first-grade students held a Hawaiian luau at the school, second and seventh grade students went bowling at Brunswick Bowl, third-graders were at Lambs Farm in Libertyville, fourth-graders went to the Blast Zone in Vernon Hills, fifth-graders were at the Libertyville Sports Complex, and sixth grade students visited Key Lime Cove in Gurnee.
More than 90 fifth-graders spent their day scaling the climbing wall, playing capture the flag and crab soccer, and competing in strange field games such as indoor nordic skiing and scooter races.
"It's fun. There's lots of activities to do," John Stokovich said as he ate a Popsicle. "I think I'm going rock climbing today and, hopefully, I can make it to the top."
One group of students made their way slowly across the gym as they tried to coordinate their walking while racing on giant nordic skis. Another group took turns scaling the giant climbing wall, testing their skills as they moved from rock to rock.
The last day of classes for Oak Grove School was later than most area schools because of snow and cold weather days, and because of a water main break that canceled a school day, according to a school official.
