Take part in drop-in days at Heritage Farm

Fill the family's summer schedule with fun by taking time for monthly drop-in days at the Schaumburg Park District's Volkening Heritage Farm at Spring Valley.

Located at 201 S. Plum Grove Road, Heritage Farm allows visitors to step back into the 1880s when Schaumburg was a rural German farm community.

"Drop-in days are a great way for kids to get hands-on experience and something to take home," said Patty Kennedy, farm program coordinator. "The activities show an appreciation for tasks and chores that today we no longer perform because of modern technology."

Upcoming drop-in days include:

• Garden Helpers, 10 a.m. to noon June 18. Participants will learn about heirloom vegetables in the farm kitchen garden, help with garden maintenance and plant a seed to take home and grow.

• Better with Butter, 10 a.m. to noon July 16. After helping with churning, participants may grab a jar and make their own butter. Bread and crackers will be available for tasting.

• Sundae School, 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 20. Make ice cream from scratch at this special event that allows participants to create their own sundaes.

Drop-in days are $2 per person and recommended for ages 3 and older.
