2015 Lake Villa Township Lions Club Scholarship

Every year the Lake Villa Township Lions Club awards a scholarship to area High School Students. This year the Lake Villa Lions Club awarded two scholarships: to Noora Reffat and Thomas Peterson.

Noora Reffat of Lindenhurst, daughter of Rafaat and Magwan Reffat, is a 2015 graduate of Lakes Community High School. She was accepted to Loyola University in Chicago majoring in biochemistry.

Reffat was described by one of her teachers as "an exceptional young lady with a giving heart. Despite having many demands on her time, she is always willing to carve out a few hours for volunteering."

Another teacher wrote: "Not only did Noora receive excellent grades, but was also a natural leader in class. Noora shines in her ability to speak out for justice."

Reffat's received a Certificate of Academic Recognition for six semesters, was nominated three times for National Student Leadership Conference, was nominated for Student Athletic Leadership Team, is a member of National Honor Society, and has been President of Rotary Interact Club from 2012 to present, among many other honors.

Thomas Peterson of Lake Villa is the son of Glenn and Elizabeth Peterson and a 2015 graduate of Warren Township High School. He was accepted to Iowa State University majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

School counselor Elizabeth Sagala described Peterson as "driven. (He) knows what he wishes to achieve in life and works hard to accomplish any and all goals he sets for himself. Demonstrates great potential for leadership. Works well with peers and teammates. Has strong morals and values."

Peterson was on Warren Township High School's Robotics team in 2012, and on a Computer Aided Design team designing a robot in 2013. With this club he attended competitions in 2013-14, winning the regionals, and later attended World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri finishing 21st in their division and 42nd overall throughout the world. This past year the team placed fourth and competed again this spring.

Perterson is an Eagle Scout and has volunteered with many community projects.
