Firefighter suffers minor injury battling Naperville blaze

A Naperville firefighter suffered minor injuries Sunday morning when he fell through the floor of a home while battling a fire that left the residence uninhabitable.

Firefighters responded at 9:55 a.m. to a report of smoke coming from the chimney and attic area of the single-story home in the 7S600 block of Olesen Drive, according to the Naperville Fire Department.

Fire crews entered the home through the front door and began an interior attack of the fire while searching for occupants. At 10:19 a.m., a report from inside the residence indicated a firefighter had fallen through the main floor into the basement. Crews rushed to remove the firefighter from the basement, and at 10:23 a.m. he taken out of the home to a nearby ambulance.

The firefighter was taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where he was treated and released with minor injuries, officials said.

No occupants were found in the home and the fire was declared under control at 11:35 a.m., fire officials said. Crews remained on scene for the next several hours looking for hot spots and assisting fire investigators.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, officials said.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted at the scene by DuPage County Sheriff's police, Naperville police, the DuPage County Building Department, NICOR Gas and ComEd. Fire and ambulance crews from the Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Plainfield, Lombard, Lockport, and Glen Ellyn fire departments provided coverage to the rest of the city during the fire.
