Boomers open series with 3-1 win over Greys

The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers opened a three-game weekend home series with the Frontier Greys by notching a 3-1 victory.

Greys' starter Colin Feldtman retired the first eight batters of the night before issuing a four-pitch walk to Craig Massey in the bottom of the third. Massey promptly stole second base and scored the first run of the game on a single from Mike Schulze. The lead reached 2-0 two batters later when Sam Lind notched an RBI single. The Greys battled within 2-1 but an insurance tally crossed on a sacrifice fly from Massey in the seventh.

Schaumburg starter Brett Mabry earned his first professional win by working six innings. Mabry allowed seven hits while striking out six. Evan Boyd tossed the final 1.1 innings to become the fifth player to save a game this season. The Boomers tallied just six hits in the game, two of which came from Justin Vasquez.

The Boomers (9-11) continue the series at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
