Xplore Youth Camps Blend Math and Music, Mythology and Culture

Kids can explore the connections between math and music and the influence of mythology on art, literature and music at a series of summer camps being offered at the College of Lake County's Southlake and Grayslake campuses.

The camps, offered by the CLC Center for Personal Enrichment, will be taught by Ingrid Mikolajczyk, a professional musician and vocalist. She sings with the Chicago Symphony Chorus, is tour manager for Lyric Opera's school outreach program and conducts the CLC Chamber Singers.

Three camps will be offered: "Greek Mythology," "Notes and Numbers, Music and Math" and "Walk Like an Egyptian."

"Greek Mythology" and "Notes and Numbers" will be offered Monday through Thursday, June 15-18 at the CLC Southlake Campus, 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills. "Notes and Numbers, Music and Math" will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and "Greek Mythology" from 1-4 p.m.

"Notes and Numbers will also be offered on the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St., Monday through Thursday, July 20-23, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. "Walk Like an Egyptian" will be offered on the Grayslake campus on the same dates from 1-4 p.m. The cost for each camp is $175.

Notes and Numbers, Music and Math (Grades 3-5) (course CEXP 35): Students will discover relationships between music and math through engaging hands-on activities, listening to musical examples, movement, musical games and written projects. They will learn to identify major patterns and sequences in both music and mathematics and investigate connections between rhythms, fractions and note values, proportions, time signatures, ties, addition, subtraction, intervals, form, multiplication and division.

Walk Like an Egyptian: Ancient Egypt and Mythology (Grades 6-9) (course CEXP 5): Kids will explore ancient Egyptian mythology and the art, literature, music and popular culture it inspires. They will read and hear Egyptian myths, literature and poetry in translation and discover mythological characters and places through music, discussion and fine art. They will also explore how myths have influenced advertisements and pop culture. They will choose a mythological character and participate in an "Egyptian Mythology Fashion Show," complete with costumes and a brief profile of each runway model. To prepare for the camp, students may register with a parent for the "Taste of Egypt" trip to the Oriental Institute Museum's Cairo exhibit on June 9 (course CTRP 5).

Greek Mythology (Grades 6-9) (course CEXP 81): Kids will explore ancient Greek mythology and the art, literature, music and popular culture it inspires. They will read and hear Greek myths, literature and poetry in translation and discover how myths influence advertisements and pop culture. Students will choose a mythological character and participate in the "Gods, Heroes and Creatures of Greek Mythology Fashion Show," complete with costumes and a brief profile of each runway model (Atlas, Medusa, Cyclops, Aphrodite, Hercules, etc.).
