Waukegan fishing derby

The Waukegan Park District hosts its annual fishing derby Saturday, June 6, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the pond in Bevier Park, 2255 Yorkhouse Road, Waukegan, officials said in a news release. This annual event is always scheduled on a "free fishing day" as declared by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, a day when state fishing licenses are not required. Before the fishing derby, Bevier is stocked with several hundred pounds of catfish. Prizes are awarded according to age categories for the largest fish caught. Preregistration is encouraged and day of event registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The cost varies based on age. The event is open to anyone and there is no difference in cost for non-Waukegan Park District residents, officials said. Check in for preregistered participants begins at 7 a.m. For information, call (847) 360-4700 or visit www.waukeganparks.org.
