Wheaton College removes Hastert's name

Wheaton College announced Sunday it is removing the name of former U.S. Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert from its Center for Economics, Government, and Public Policy named in his honor. The decision comes three days after Hastert, a Yorkville resident and 1964 graduate of the college, was indicted by federal authorities on charges alleging he lied to investigators and violated bank laws to hide payments he was making to keep secret allegations of misconduct dating back to his days as a high school teacher and wrestling coach. St. Charles firefighters rescue two

St. Charles firefighters rescued two residents from a burning apartment building late Saturday night. Firefighters responding at 11:43 p.m. to reports of a fire at 1742 Cumberland Drive were advised that one person was trapped on a balcony while another resident in a wheelchair was inside a bedroom. Proposal to cap community college severances stalled

A proposal that would cap community college employee severance packages and limit contract lengths remains stalled in the Illinois House at least until lawmakers come back Thursday. The College of DuPage inspired-plan would restrict severance agreements to one year's pay and applicable benefits. Full story.

Fuel truck rolls over, bursts into flames

Illinois State Police are investigating why a fuel truck rolled over and burst into flames early Sunday morning while driving east on Interstate 90. The driver emerged unhurt from the crash. The single-vehicle crash occurred at 1:12 a.m. about 1½ miles west of the Cumberland Avenue exit. Full story.

Prison for Elgin man who eluded police through state park

A 34-year-old Elgin man who escaped authorities temporarily in June 2012 after a chase through a 3,400-acre state park is headed to prison. Eric M. Galarza, formerly of the 900 block of Elma Avenue, recently pleaded guilty to aggravated domestic battery and was sentenced to seven years in prison, according to Kane County court records.
