Grayslake library announces summer concert series

The Grayslake Area Public Library has announced the upcoming Friends of the Library Summer Concert Series, which will be comprised of five concerts held outside on the library lawn, weather permitting.

The library will provide limited seating and encourages visitors to bring blankets or chairs. All concerts are free, appropriate for all ages and sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

• Monday, June 1, 7-8 p.m., Potts & Pans Steelband: Potts and Pans is an internationally acclaimed steel band comprised mainly of Northern Illinois University musicians/graduates. Recent Chicago Music Award winners, Potts and Pans highlights the diversity of the steelpan instruments and engages their audiences.

• Monday, June 15, 7-8 p.m., Ruddy Nickel: Bill Liggett and Larry Sell formed Ruddy Nickel, a four-piece blues/jazz hybrid in 2012. Their different styles blend together and have been compared to Taj Mahall, Keb Mo', and Bruce Cockburn. Ruddy Nickel will share its original songwriting, crisp vocals, instrumental artistry and some carefully chosen cover songs.

• Monday, July 13, 7-8 p.m., Petra van Nuis Quintet: The Petra van Nuis Quartet performed for the winter series and returns for an outdoor performance. Petra's lush vocals, along with guitarist husband Andy Brown, bassist Joe Policastro, drummer Bob Rummage and saxophonist Eric Schneider will deliver a musical chemistry.

• Monday, July 27, 7-8 p.m., Freshwater: This five-piece band plays contemporary and traditional bluegrass music from the deepest pools of traditional and contemporary bluegrass to original material. Bill Garvey, Don Damaschke, Harvey Riekoff, Dennis Waltman, Melissa & Gerry Baccash will mix it up vocally and instrumentally.

• Monday, Aug. 3, 7-8 p.m., Makani and Friends: Annual summer concert favorites, Makani will bring a taste of Hawaii to Grayslake. The young angelic voices, along with strumming ukuleles, rhythmic beating of Tahitian drums, and traditional dances of Hokule'a, will take you on a musical journey of the Polynesian Islands.
