Warrenville, West Chicago police participate in Cop on a Rooftop

Customers visiting local Dunkin' Donuts Friday morning saw what's becoming a familiar sight each year.

Dozens of police officers were stationed on the roofs, in an effort to raise awareness and gather money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which benefits Special Olympics Illinois.

"More than $2 million has been raised from this event over the last 12 years and we're hoping to set new records this year," Illinois Torch Run Director Eric Smith said in a statement. "It's a fun event that works."

In Warrenville and West Chicago, police were handing out free doughnut coupons to anyone who made a donation to the Torch Run. Guests donated more than $10 received a Torch Run travel mug.

In West Chicago, though, officers were grounded, and did not clamber onto the rooftops.

"You get more interaction this way," officer Joe Jaztambide said.

The Torch Run involves more than 3,000 officers who carry the Flame of Hope through their towns to the Special Olympics State Summer Games in Normal each June.
