Stevenson sophomore named to U.S. Physics Team for international competition in India

A Lake County high school student has been named to the U.S. Physics Team for an upcoming competition in India.

Jason Lu, a sophomore at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, is one of five American students who'll represent the USA in the 46th International Physics Olympiad in July.

He and his teammates will train at the University of Maryland for most of June, then train some more in Thailand before the contest, which runs July 5-12 in Mumbai.

"This is an incredible honor for an extraordinary student," Stevenson High spokesman Jim Conrey said. "Jason was a member of our state champion mathematics and Science Olympiad teams this year, and now this."

Lu, 16, of Lincolnshire, couldn't be reached for comment.

He was among 20 students named to the U.S. team in May, but only five will compete in India, Conrey said.

The other U.S. students picked for the team that will go to India are from California, Maryland, New Jersey and Ohio.

It's the second consecutive year a Stevenson High student was on the U.S. physics team. Then-senior Richard Zhu of Vernon Hills made the squad in 2014.
