The Wildbird Shack to open in Mount Prospect

The Wildbird Shack, a wild bird supply store for the wild birding enthusiast, will open in downtown Mount Prospect at 854 E. Northwest Hwy. just in time for the summer migratory birding season.

The Wildbird Shack will offer everything for the novice to expert level wild birder. The store aims to educate and create an awareness of birding, conservation, and nature.

"Birding is an economical hobby," said Paula Levy, partner at the Wildbird Shack. "It's something children can take part in without too much of a financial investment, and it's multigenerational. Kids can enjoy it on their own or with their parents or grandparents."

Partner Alyse Cohen Burman, who has been birding for over a decade adds, "Birding is becoming increasingly beneficial in autism, Alzheimer's and pain therapies. We hope to be a resource in the community on the healing effects of birding while encouraging the preservation of the birds' natural habitats."

A ribbon-cutting ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 2 and an open house reception will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 5.

Upon walking through the doors of the Wildbird Shack, one will take a trip back in time to find a repurposed and antique bird décor in the quaint store. Browsing through, one will find sections on bird-scaping: how to properly landscape a yard to attract specific birds, dozens of different bird feeders, hundreds of handcrafted birdhouses, beautiful bird baths, organic bird feed, vast educational resources, and local artisan bird-themed gifts. The Wildbird Shack will offer monthly classes and discussions, such as how to properly bird-scape for different birds, and quarterly bird walks, with the first walk to take place in July on a date to be announced.

The Wildbird Shack's first neighborhood chat, "Inviting Birds to Dine in Your Backyard" will take place on Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are suggested. Call (847) 873-4090 for reservations.
