World's Largest Swimming Lesson promotes safety, fun

Schaumburg Park District pools are taking part in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record for swim lessons.

The Water Works, 505 N. Springinsguth Road, Meineke Pool, 220 E. Weathersfield Way and Bock Pool, 1223 W. Sharon Lane, will join aquatic facilities worldwide at 10 a.m. June 18 to host The World's Largest Swimming Lesson. Designed to promote the importance of teaching children to swim and prevent drowning, the event includes an hour-long free swim lesson for participants ages 1 and older.

"Drowning is 100 percent preventable and swim lessons save lives," said Heather Hagstrom, aquatics supervisor. "Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 5, so we thought this would be a great program to build awareness."

Swimmers will be divided into groups based on age. Last year's Guinness World Record for the event was 36,564 swimmers from 22 countries.

Morning swim lessons will not be held on June 18.
