Flower thieves active in Des Plaines

Thieves in Des Plaines have targeted flowers, an item you might not normally expect to be in danger.

The police department's blotter report includes a half-dozen flower thefts. It started when thieves stole two 3-foot-tall metal pots containing daisies between 5 p.m. May 8 and 3 p.m. May 10 at a home on the 1200 block of White Street. Value was estimated at $68.

After a lull, thieves stole 12 flower pots with flowers in the early morning hours of May 13 outside a home on the 700 block of Thacker Street. Value was estimated at $200.

Thefts escalated the night of May 14. Thieves stole four plastic potted plants weighing approximately 50 pounds each outside a side door at a home on the 100 block of Cranbrook Drive. Value was estimated at $200. They stole two metal standing planters and one plastic hanging planter, both with plants, from the front of a home on the 100 block of East Bradley. Value was estimated at $50. They stole a plastic hanging plant worth $15 from the front porch at a home on the 500 block of Bedford Lane. And they stole a metal hook and two plastic hanging baskets with plants at a home on the 500 block of South Westgate Road; no value was given.
