MainStreet Libertyville presents annual historic home tour

MainStreet Libertyville's 12th annual Historic Home Tour will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 6.

Participants can visit and share stories with homeowners while experiencing the unique characteristics and architectural details of their homes and gardens.

The tour theme repeats last year's, "Bridging the Architecture of the Past with the Present," by opening five houses built between 1870 and 2006. What each of these houses share are recognizable architectural styles that include Arts and Crafts, Queen Anne, Victorian Italianate, Chicago Brick Bungalow, and Farmhouse. The Cook Mansion, a Victorian remodeled with a classic colonial portico, will also be included.

The tour booklet and wristband can be ordered online at www.mainstreetlibertyville.org, in advance, with a $15-per-person donation to Main Street Libertyville. The donation will be $20 on the event day.

Volunteers will be in Cook Park June 6 beginning at 9:30 a.m. to distribute booklets and wristbands for pickup or purchase.

The design committee believes the tour theme is very relevant for how we view historic preservation and energy conservation in 2015. Today's building costs are often too prohibitive to construct homes with the materials used in the past and the craftsmanship required to create the intricate details found in classic architectural styles.

Yet, the newer houses on the tour have captured the spirit of authentic architectural styling while incorporating the energy efficiencies that enhance the health, safety, comfort, and durability needed in modern residential buildings.

Event sponsors are Builders Cabinet, Chelle Design Group, Townee Square Restaurant, Martin John, JB Brickworks and Allstate/Sedrik Newbern.
