May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health America work to educate people about mental health conditions, fight the stigma that comes with the disorders, provide support for those affected and advocate for equal care. Organizations also encourage people to seek screening and help if they suspect something is wrong. Some mental health facts:

• One in five adults will have a mental health condition in any given year

• One in two people will have a diagnosable mental health condition during a lifetime

• One in 10 adults has a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar

• About 18 percent of adults have an anxiety disorder such as post-traumatic stress

• Only 41 percent of adults with a mental health condition get treatment

• Half of people who will have mental health conditions develop them before age 14
