More charges possible in Elgin sex assault, child porn case?

Could additional charges be filed against a 57-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a teen girl and filming it?

Elgin police have seized a variety of items from a 10-foot by 15-foot storage locker that was rented by Ray T. Tonsul, according to court records.

Tonsul, of the 5200 block of Hoffman Street, Skokie, faces charges of criminal sexual assault, indecent solicitation of a child and child pornography.

Police arrested Tonsul in mid-April after his girlfriend found an SD memory card at her home, used her computer to view it, and saw a recording of Tonsul committing a sexual assault, according to an affidavit used to obtain the search warrant.

The victim told investigators Tonsul sexually assaulted her in the storage unit, the affidavit said.

The search warrant rendered two cameras, 12 SD cards, a folding stool, four handheld lights, CDs and DVDs, a hard drive, small tripod and other items.

Kane County prosecutors wouldn't comment on the status of Tonsul's case or what was seized in the search.

Tonsul has been released from the Kane County jail after posting bond, and is due in court June 26. He is to have no contact with anyone younger than 18 while out on bond.

Tonsul faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Pedophile admits he needs help

A former North Aurora man has decided not to fight the Illinois attorney general's office's move to have him committed indefinitely as a sexually violent person.

Daniel P. Stage, 39, and his defense attorneys recently agreed with prosecutors that two clinical psychologists who interviewed him concluded it was more than likely he would reoffend if released.

Under a 1998 law, a person who has been convicted of a sex crime, has a mental disorder, and a jury or judge concludes is "substantially probable" to commit another crime, can be held indefinitely by the state's Department of Human Services until the person is deemed fit to re-enter society.

Stage was released from prison in June 2012 after serving a four-year sentence after he violated probation for sexual abuse and has been held by the Human Services Department since then.

Prison for cocaine charge

A 37-year-old Iowa man recently was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing cocaine after a traffic stop at Route 47 and Interstate 88 in May 2014.

Mark A. Kidd, of the 3900 block of Eighth Street, Des Moines, also must pay $33,310 in fines and costs, including a $16,525 drug fine, according to court records.

Authorities said Kidd had 12 ounces of cocaine on him, along with $5,000 cash, at the time of his arrest.

The guilty plea was accepted by Judge Susan Clancy Boles. Under state law, Kidd can have his sentence cut in half for good behavior while in prison.
