Boomers' comeback falls short

The Schaumburg Boomers made a comeback but could not overcome the visiting Lake Erie Crushers in a 12-8 defeat.

Lake Erie opened a 9-1 lead by scoring 6 runs in the top of the third and 3 in the fourth. Schaumburg battled back, scoring in four consecutive innings. Michael Valadez doubled home 2 runs in the fourth and newcomer Steve Rogers singled in a run to make it 9-4. Down 11-4, Schaumburg scored 4 straight runs to battle within 11-8. Alexi Colon doubled home a run in the sixth while a couple of errors led to 2 more.

The teams combined for 30 hits. Eight of the nine hitters in the Schaumburg lineup posted at least 1. Leadoff man Mike Schulze finished with 4 hits, falling a home run shy of the cycle. Ryan Tuntland, Valadez, and Rogers logged 2 hits each with Valadez driving in a pair. Anthony Gomez allowed 7 runs in 5 innings, suffering the loss. Hideyoshi Otake tossed a season-high 3 innings in relief and did not allow a run. Evan Boyd struck out the side in the ninth.

The Boomers (5-4) conclude the Memorial Day weekend series with Lake Erie on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a 2015 Magnet Schedule compliments of Frato's Pizza and The Daily Herald. RHP Brett Mabry (0-0, 3.60) is the scheduled starter for the Boomers against RHP Hunter Adkins (0-0, 0.00) in the finale.
