60 bike Elk Grove with the mayor on Saturday

The 4th annual Bike with the Mayor staring Mayor Craig Johnson kicked off this Memorial Day weekend Saturday morning with about 60 people of all ages participating in the 5 mile leisurely bike ride around Elk Grove Village. The ride started and ended at the Elk Grove Historical Museum.

"Biking is fun," state Rep. Marty Moylan yelled out as riders saddled up for the event sponsored by the Friends of Cycling.

The event promotes enjoyment and safety in biking, Johnson said.

"You could not do better than this," Johnson said, referring to the 80-degree temperature and the blue sky.

Freda Brown, 75, of Schaumburg turned out dressed in a blue-and-orange jersey, spandex shorts and blue socks for her fourth time at the event.

"When people see this old woman on a bike, (they think) 'She can do it, so maybe I should give it a try,'" she said.

She said she likes cycling because she has no health problems and gets a sense of enjoyment from meeting old and new friends.

"There are no weirdos in biking," she added.
