Elgin man gets 12 years prison for 2014 sex assault

An Elgin man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the sexual assault last summer of a minor.

Thomas E. White, 62, of the 600 block of East Chicago Street, pleaded guilty in March to felony criminal sexual assault of the victim, who was younger than 18 at the time, prosecutors said.

White was eligible for an extended prison term because of a 2006 felony conviction for delivery of a controlled substance.

Kane County Judge Clint Hull accepted White's guilty plea Thursday and issued the sentence, of which White must serve 85 percent, or a little over 10 years.

White also gets credit for about 11 months served at the Kane County jail while the case was pending, and must register as a sex offender for life.

"Thanks to everyone on our Child Advocacy Center team who had a role in the case, and to the victim's family, who immediately reported this abuse and fully cooperated with us in the prosecution of this case," said State's Attorney Joe McMahon.

People who suspect neglect or abuse of children may call their local police department of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services hotline at (800) 25-ABUSE or (800) 252-2873 to make an anonymous complaint.
