Seventh grade students at Hawthorn Middle School North got a realistic lesson about the Civil War Thursday.

Students rotated through various demonstrations and speeches by area reenactors during the Vernon Hills school's sixth annual Civil War Day event.

The day started with a cannon blast, followed by a news conference and welcome by an actor portraying President Abraham Lincoln. Other presentations were given by actors portraying generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant, and Mrs. Lincoln.

The students also learned about weapons used during the war, battlefield surgery and period children's games.
