Aurora man faces weapons, drug charges
A 32-year-old Aurora man was arrested this week after police and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms said they searched his apartment and found two guns, crack cocaine, marijuana and nearly $1,800.
Willie M. Mayes Jr., of the 2000 block of West Illinois Avenue, faces up to seven years in prison on the most severe charge of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and is due in court June 4.
Mayes also face charges of possession of a controlled substance, according to Kane County court records.
Dan Ferrelli, spokesman for Aurora police, said police and ATF agents conducted a joint investigation and executed a search warrant at about 8 p.m. Monday at Mayes' apartment.
Authorities seized a semiautomatic handgun, a .38-caliber revolver, along with 5.3 grams of crack cocaine, 20.62 grams of marijuana and $1,759, Ferrelli said.
Mayes, who served time in prison for a 2006 drug charge and a repeat domestic battery conviction from 2012, is not allowed to own a gun because he is a felon.
Mayes' bail amount was not immediately available Thursday.
