Exhibit shows work of local artist and illustrator John Phillips

Art enthusiasts can see the work of John Phillips in a more intimate setting this summer as the Museums at Lisle Station Park hosts a special exhibit, "Capturing Culture: The Diverse Art of John Phillips."

A local, award-winning illustrator, painter and designer, Phillips' work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and several galleries throughout the Midwest. The Lisle exhibit features his various styles of art, including 3-D objects, illustrations and personal artifacts.

Lisle Park District acquired the John Phillips Collection in 1996 after the death of his wife, Elverda Phillips. "Capturing Culture" will be on display through Saturday, Oct. 24, in the Lisle Depot Museum at the museum park, 921 School St., Lisle.

The exhibit was made possible, in part, by a donation from the Lisle Partners for Parks Foundation.

Two supplemental events relating to the exhibit will be offered this summer in the Netzley-Yender Farmhouse. Art historian Wendy Bright will lead a discussion about the art deco style's influence on American culture and art, comparing this unique, modern style to paintings from the John Phillips Collection at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 13.

At 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, the movie "Drew - The Man Behind the Poster" will be shown, followed by a discussion of Phillips' illustrations and paintings and the public perception of the term "art."

Daily admission to the museum is free and tours are available by appointment. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the museum will be open extended hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays, and 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays.
