Naperville Park District launches 'Senior Games'
Who says games are mostly for kids?
Adults ages 50 and older are invited to enter the Naperville Park District's inaugural Naperville Senior Games for a chance to compete in a variety of events from athletics to art.
The first event of the Senior Games begins May 27 and 31, with step one of the ceramic art competition. Participants will mold their pottery pieces during one of two workshops, then return June 11 or 14 for glazing. The other events, including billiards, golf, Ping-Pong, pinochle, softball, swimming, tennis and trapshooting, occur in late June with an awards luncheon Friday, June 26.
The idea to begin a series of competitive events for adults older than 50 came from learning about other senior games offered by area park districts, including Chicago Park District. Although not officially a part of the National Senior Games, the Naperville games share a vision similar to the one stated on the National Senior Games Association's website, which is "to promote healthy lifestyles for adults through education, fitness and sport."
"I think it's critical that we offer our seniors a way to stay active while also challenging their fitness and skill levels," said park district Executive Director Ray McGury. "Competition is a healthy thing. The fact that you show up to compete means you're not taking your physical and mental abilities for granted."
Online registration for the Naperville Senior Games is open for all events. Medals will be awarded in each category for first, second and third place. Although there is no cost to attend the awards luncheon, registration is required in order to have an accurate count when placing the food and beverage order and is limited to the first 140 registrations.

Those interested in entering the ceramics competition are encouraged to begin planning their piece, which must be completed no later than 3 p.m. Sunday, June 14. The ceramic artwork will be judged on originality, craftsmanship, overall construction and skill of technique, balance of design and use of color and glazing techniques.
Registration is $5 for Naperville residents and $6 for nonresidents and includes access to two workshops at Studio One beginning May 27. Participation is limited to 12 adults ages 50 or older with sufficient experience to create their pieces with minimal assistance.
"We are delighted to be able to launch the first Naperville Senior Games this year," said program manager Lorraine Ouellette. "The friendly competition will add a new level of fun and challenge to a variety of activities that active adults already enjoy."
