Library Celebrates Schaumburg's Sister Cities With Special Programs

In conjunction with a library-wide Schaumburg Sister Cities project, the Schaumburg Township District Library will feature programs and movies honoring the village's sister cities of Schaumburg, Germany; Safranbolu, Turkey; Namerikawa, Japan; and Hyderabad, India. The following programs will take place in June and July at the central library in Schaumburg, 130 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg.

Sister Cities movies will be shown at 7 p.m. on Thursdays in the Audiovisual Theatre on the library's first floor. All ages are invited to view "The Lunchbox" (India) on June 11, "Vitus" (Germany) on June 25, "Shall We Dance" (Japan) on July 9, and "Watchtower" (Turkey) on July 23. All movies are rated PG, with the exception of "Watchtower," which is not rated. All will be shown in their native languages with English subtitles.

"Seeking Spiceland" is slated from 7-8:30 p.m., Monday, June 8, in the Rasmussen South Room. Attendees will learn about the spice trade and the delights of using flavorful Indian spices. Presented by food historian and traveler Cynthia Clampitt. Registration required.

"Dances of India" will take place from 2-3:30 p.m., Saturday, June 13, in the Rasmussen South Room. Vidya Nahar and her fellow dance teachers and students will present India's classical, folk and Bollywood dances. Registration required.

"Culinaria Germania," to be held from 7:30-9 p.m., Monday, June 22 in the Rasmussen South Room, will be presented by German historian Anette Isaacs. She will take the audience on a virtual journey through the culinary wonders of her native country. Registration required.

"Alpine Thunder" is slated from 7-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 24 in the Rasmussen South Room. This musical program showcases regional German folk music and provides demonstrations of how to play the alp horn and more. Attendees will learn about traditions, language and regional dress. Registration required.

The Chicago Koto Group will celebrate Schaumburg's relationship with Namerikawa, Japan from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday July 7, in the central library lobby. Two koto players and a shakuhachi player will perform traditional Japanese ensemble music.

"Origami Basics" is scheduled from 7-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 8 in the Rasmussen South Room. Adults and teens are invited for a night of origami fun with origami enthusiast Ian Goss. No experience is necessary. Paper will be provided. Registration required.

"Exploring Turkey" will take place from 7-8:30 p.m., Monday, July 20, in the Rasmussen South Room. Participants will enjoy a virtual photographic journey through Turkey with photographer Laura Rodriguez. Sites will include the metropolitan streets of Istanbul, the ruins of Ani and views of first century BC temple of Antiochus I at sunset.
