Join 20th annual Tuna Kahuna Fishing Contest

On Saturday, June 20, the South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the FUNdation, will host its 20th annual Tuna Kahuna fishing contest at Blackhawk Park, off Blackhawk Circle in South Elgin.

For the past 19 years, parents and grandparents have been bringing their children for a wonderful fishing experience! This special event is for children, age 15 and younger.

Kids will get a taste of fishing while at the same time; get the chance to become the big "Kahuna."

A DJ will be on site and prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in length in five different categories.

There will be a bouncy house. Rapid Response Recreation will on site with games and prizes, and South Elgin firemen will be in the water for "Hook, Line & Fireman."

Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the food tent.

"Watching children catch fish, especially the first fish of their young lives, makes my day," said Shane Hamilton, superintendent of South Elgin Parks & Recreation. "After catching that first fish, if Tuna Kahuna sparks an interest in fishing and the outdoors we have done our job. I would like to think that over the past 20 years we have created some fishermen/fisherwomen in our community. That makes it all worth it."

The day begins with registration at 8 a.m. and the event runs from 9 a.m. to noon. New this is year, they are offering preregistration. If you register by Friday, June 12, you will receive a free lure at event check-in.

Volunteer staff will help the kids land their fish. Each child who catches a fish receives a "catch and release" certificate. Tuna Kahuna gives children the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate our natural resources. This is a day of learning and fun.

All participants must be accompanied by an adult and need to bring their own fishing equipment and bait.

The SS Minnow Bait Shop will be on-site selling bait at the event. Be sure to mark your calendar for Tuna Kahuna!
