Vernon Hills man charged in residential burglaries

A program in a stolen computer led Vernon Hills police to a suspect who has been charged with burglary and theft.

Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of Jason D. Chapa, 31, of the 1000 block of Cumberland Court, in connection with two residential burglaries reported this month.

On May 1, a resident on the 200 block of Chesapeake Court reported a bicycle and golf clubs had been taken from the garage. On May 7, a resident on the 1000 block of Hayes Court reported several computers were taken from the home and a toolbox from the garage, police said.

Working with the owner of the stolen computers, police said they determined a program in one of the units revealed its location, which was in the same area as the burglaries. The bicycle and golf clubs from the first burglary, as well as the tools and computers in the second were found during a search of Chapa's home, police said. He was charged with two counts of residential burglary and two counts of theft, all felonies, police said.

Other items, including radar detectors, power and hand tools, bicycles, golf clubs, brass musical instruments, computers and a wheelchair were also seized during the search, according to police. Investigators are trying to determine if the items were stolen. Anyone living in the area who is missing such property should call police at (847) 362-4449.

Chapa was held in the Lake County jail on $200,000 bail, meaning he needed to post $20,000 to be released. A court date is scheduled for June 3.
