ECC offers new location for substance abuse counseling classes

Beginning in fall 2015, Elgin Community College will expand its substance abuse counseling classes to include a new satellite location at Centegra Specialty Hospital, 527 W. South St., Woodstock.

The ECC Human Services program is one of only a few in the northern Illinois region, and holds more accreditations than any other Illinois program.

Accrediting agencies of the ECC Human Services program include the Council for Standards in Human Services Education, the National Addiction Studies Accreditation Commission, and the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association.

ECC intends to provide all courses required for eligibility to take the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) exam at this McHenry County location.

ECC will offer the following fall classes at Centegra Specialty Hospital:

• SUB 112: Basic Substance Abuse Pharmacology: This course addresses the impact that substances of abuse have on the human body and the effect of substance use and addiction on neurological and behavioral functioning. Class meets Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8:45 p.m. from Aug. 19 to Dec. 9.

• SUB 215: Basic Substance Abuse and Treatment: This course introduces students to the nature of substance use disorders, including development, symptoms, consequences, and prevention and treatment of abuse and dependence. Class meets Monday evenings from 6 to 8:45 p.m. from Aug. 17 to Dec. 7.

ECC will also offer a special topics course in the fall designed to prepare students to work as Certified Recovery Support Specialists (CRSS). There is a growing demand for trained professionals to serve in these roles across the state. This course will be offered at the Elgin campus.

Registration for these classes is now open at elgin.edu/accessECC.
