Find magic in 'Disney's My Son Pinocchio'

See the adventures of Pinocchio, the Blue Fairy, Stromboli and a lively cast of characters in Spotlight Youth Theater Kane County's production of "Disney's My Son Pinocchio."

Performances are Friday through Sunday, May 22-24, at the Elgin Community College Blizzard Theater, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Tickets are $9-$14.

In this musical version of the classic tale, Geppetto journeys beyond his toy shop to discover what makes the "perfect child." Audiences learn that from Geppetto's point of view, the Blue Fairy has really made a mess of his wish for a son. Pinocchio has not lived up to his father's expectations, and Geppetto is not at all satisfied with the results of the Blue Fairy's magic. She then leads Geppetto on a magical journey as he is transformed from a demanding creator to a real, live father.

Along the way, audiences will be treated to classic Disney songs from the animated film as well as additional songs written by Academy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz ("Wicked," "Pocahontas," "Godspell"). This family-friendly musical is appropriate for all audiences and is a mix of heartwarming fairy tale and action-packed adventure.

Elgin resident, Elijah Mancilla, 18, is portraying Geppetto. This is not the first time Elijah has played a father on stage, but he said it can be challenging to make the character relatable.

"I've been looking at my dad for inspiration for some of Geppetto because I was difficult as a kid, too," Mancilla said. "I hope parents will be able to see themselves in my portrayal."

Also from Elgin, Makayla McLoughlin, 14, is playing the magical Blue Fairy. Makayla's character is well-known from the film as the one who grants Geppetto's wish to have a son and brings the toymaker's puppet to life. However, in this stage production, she is a bit different from in the film.

"In the original film, the Blue Fairy embodies beauty, kindness and magic," Makayla said. "In 'My Son, Pinocchio,' she reveals that she has another side that is authoritative, ostentatious and narcissistic."

Makayla was also pleased to learn that she would be singing one of Disney's classic songs, "When You Wish Upon a Star."

"It brings a smile to my face every time I start singing," she said. "It's just such an iconic and important song that has represented Disney for decades. It's an honor to be able to sing it."

Playing "Pinocchio" is Brandon Nieves, 11, from South Elgin. Brandon looks at playing this iconic character as a dream come true.

"I am looking forward to bringing the cartoon character to life," he said.
