Baseball: Mundelein clinches NSC title

Mundelein clinched the North Suburban Lake Division baseball championship with a 15-9 victory over Lake Zurich on Monday.

Relief pitcher Ray Calabrese got the win. Luke Peterson and Carter Naughton were each 3-for-4 with 2 doubles to lead the Mundelein offense. Cooper Michalski was 2-for-4 with a double, and Keegan Wienkowski and Brendan Murphy also doubled.

For Lake Zurich, Steve Elrod had 2 doubles and Austin Wells had a 2-run homer.

Grayslake Central 14, Woodstock North 2 (5): Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen reached the 300-win milestone with the victory. He is in his 13th season as head coach. Adding to the special moment, Whalen's son Brett picked up the win on the mound, allowing just 2 runs and throwing 4 strikeouts over four innings. Grayslake Central had 13 hits on the game as Ethan LaBeck double and tripled while Jay Hoffman had 3 hits, including a double.

Lakes 21, Antioch 2: Lakes rolled up 19 hits and had two big innings in rolling to a big win. The Eagles scored 6 runs in the second inning and 12 runs in the sixth inning. Cody Nuxoll had 3 hits and 4 RBI for the Eagles while teammates Ben Milewski and Matt Putman each had 2 hits. They combined for 7 RBI. Meanwhile, winning pitcher Ben Haviland improved to 4-0 on the mound by allowing just 2 walks over 4 2/3 innings. For Antioch, Travis Slywka and Dominic Olesak each had 2 hits.

Stevenson 10, Lake Forest 0: Jake Nusinow threw a complete-game no-hitter for Stevenson. He finished with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks over six innings. Pat Loeffler and Robby McGaha each had 2 hits for the Patriots, who broke up a scoreless game with 3 runs in the fourth inning.

Grant 15, Vernon Hills 3: Grant broke the game open in the fourth, scoring 8 runs. Michael Bengston and Eddie Kusiak each had 3 hits for Grant. Bengston had a single, double and a home run. He brought in 4 runs on the day. Winning pitcher Andrew Stone struck out 7 batters and allowed no earned runs. For Vernon Hills, sophomores Joe Rangel and Drew Wingardner were bright spots. They each had 2 hits.

Carmel 5, St. Patrick 2: Skylar Williams got his third win of the season by pitching a complete game in which he gave up only 3 hits and no earned runs. Conner Pett had 2 hits for the Corsairs.

Libertyville 17, Zion-Benton 3: Libertyville racked up 16 hits in the win. Riley Lees, Jimmy Govern and Mitchell Townsend each had 3 hits for the Wildcats. Govern had a double and a triple while Lees homered. Winning pitcher Ben Kimpler had 8 strikeouts over six innings.

Wauconda 29, North Chicago 1: Wauconda was up 24-0 by the end of the second inning. Jefferson Moorhead, Joey Schaer and Pierson Gibis each had 3 hits for Wauconda while Joshua Anderson had a home run.
