Baseball: Lake County roundup

Warren's baseball team hit the 20-win mark Saturday.

The Blue Devils swept a nonconference doubleheader from Wheeling, winning 10-5 and 12-1 to improve to 21-10.

Matt Burch (2-for-4) and Chris Mathieu each had 3 RBI in the first game, helping Sam LaMotte earn the win.

Warren got doubles from Burch, Mathieu, Brad Zahn and Noah Daniel in Game 2. Scott Gordon picked up the win.

Antioch 8, Richmond-Burton 7: Ben Gutke's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth snapped a 7-7 tie and capped a six-run inning.

Gutke finished 4-for-4 and also earned the win in relief. The sophomore pitched 3 innings, allowing just 1 hit and no runs, while striking out five and walking one.

Conner Geidner was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI for Antioch, which also got doubles from Travis Slywka and Connor Kaiser. Dominic Olesak was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Carmel, Marist split: The Corsairs settled for a split in the East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader against Marist, losing the opener 6-1 before winning the second game 3-1.

Connor Pett (2-for-3) and Cooper Johnson (RBI) both doubled in Game 1. Kevin Molloy picked up the win in Game 2, allowing only 3 hits over7 innings. He didn't strike out a batter but didn't walk one either.

Carmel was led offensively by Griffin Norton (2-for-3, run), Matt Collins (2-for-3, run) and Johnson (2-for-3, run, RBI).

Vernon Hills 25, Reavis 4: Robby Nardini jacked a grand slam, and sophomores also helped fuel the visiting Cougars in their nonconference win.

Sophomore Andrew Smith made the start and earned the win, allowing only 1 run. Classmates Matt Gramins (2-for-2, run, 2 RBI), Brennan Reback (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI), Joe Rangel (2-for-2, double, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Drew Winegarder (4 runs, 2 RBI) contributed much of the offense.

The Cougars scored 7 runs in the second to break the game open. After an out to start the inning, six hitters reached safely. The big blow came off the bat of Nardini, whose grand slam was just the start of his 5-RBI game.

Vernon Hills scored 11 more runs in the third.

Libertyville 12, Schaumburg 3: Riley Lees had another productive day from the leadoff spot for the Wildcats, going 3-for-5 with a triple, 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Jake Vogt was 2-for-3 and Jimmy Govern went 2-for-4 for Libertyville. Vogt and Cam Shaffer doubled, while Tim Calamari contributed a single and 2 RBI.

Palatine 5, Grant 4: Blain Kugel and Ricky Allen each hit a 2-run homer in the fourth inning for the Bulldogs, but the Pirates pulled out the nonconference game by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Grant fell to 23-8.

Marengo 7, Lakes 4: The Indians jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the nonconference game and never looked back.

Lakes fell to 18-8-1.
