Fire closes Geneva McDonald's on South Randall Road

A McDonald's in Geneva was closed Saturday due to an early morning fire, authorities said.

Geneva fire officials said the fire broke out at roughly 4 a.m. Saturday behind a grill at the fast-food joint at 1812 S. Randall Road. No injuries were reported and investigators are attempting to pinpoint what caused the fire.

Two employees were outside when firefighters arrived and observed flames coming from the roof, authorities said.

Firefighters determined the flames came from an exhaust hood and duct work designed to ventilate the McDonald's grill area. The building's fire suppression system had activated, but the flames shot up the duct work and outside the restaurant, according to the fire department.

It took about 20 minutes for crews to extinguish the flames that were in the grill and duct work.

Officials said the McDonald's was scheduled to be closed at least through Saturday for cleanup and fire suppression system repairs.

Damage was contained to the vent system duct work and the exhaust fan the roof, officials said.

In addition to fire investigators, the Kane County Health Department and Geneva building division were summoned to the McDonald's.

Geneva crews received help from Batavia, Elburn and St. Charles firefighters.
