Authorities say they want help in Aurora arson involving 12 vehicles

Aurora police say arson is suspected in fire damage to 12 vehicles discovered in a parking lot on the city's west side early Saturday.

Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said a preliminary estimate pegs the damage to the dozen vehicles at $48,000. The fire occurred in a privately owned lot apparently used by someone who buys and sells used vehicles.

At about 2 a.m. Saturday, police officers and firefighters responded to a call regarding a possible structure fire near Highland Avenue and Charles Street, authorities said.

However, what authorities found were the burning vehicles in the 600 block of Charles. Set ablaze were nine sedans, two SUVs and a van.

No injuries were reported.

Ferrelli said police detectives and fire department arson investigators are seeking the public's assistance to help crack the case.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area or with information on the suspected arson is asked to call Aurora police investigators at (630) 256-5500. Tips also may be left with Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000.

Crime Stoppers tipsters may remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to any arrests.

In addition, tips can be submitted through an Aurora police application for mobile devices.
