Fremd advances to sectional final
All-conference goalie Emma Jeronimus came up big Friday, stopping 14 shots - including one on a penalty shot - in helping Fremd prevail against Prospect 5-2 in Schaumburg girls water polo sectional semifinal play.
Fremd (17-9) got 1 goal apiece from Kayla Helsdingen, Emma Hoffman, Nicole Degla, Becca Rutkowksi and Emily Kini to earn a spot in Saturday's 11:30 a.m. sectional championshp game against top seed Conant.
Senior Danielle McCallister scored both goals for Prospect (14-10), which got a 14-save, 1-assist performance from goalie Lauren Broz.
Conant 14, Schaumburg 4: Carmen Rosas (7 goals) and keeper Maddie Demaret (15 saves) helped pave the way to a second straight sectional final appearance for the top-seeded Cougars.
Samantha Wooley had 4 steals and also scored twice for Conant (27-3), which would earn the program's first state berth if it can win the sectional championship.
Schaumburg (11-13) got a pair of goals from senior Britney Vasquez.
Buffalo Grove sectional
Palatine 8, Wheeling 4: The No. 2 seed Pirates edged the No. 3 seed Wildcats as senior Caroline Wojtas paced Palatine with 5 goals.
Caitlin McHugh (2 goals, 2 assists, 2 steals) and Kristin Anderson (1 goals, 3 assists, 3 steals) and goalie Tess O'Brien (11 saves) also had big games for the Pirates.
Palatine meets top Stevenson, a 16-4 victor against Lake Forest, for the sectional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Wheeling, a two-time MSL East champion, concludes its season at 21-10.
Glenbrook N. sectional
New Trier 14, Maine West 7: The top-seeded Trevians advanced to the sectional final as Lauren Barrett scored a game-high 5 goals. Emily Morrison scored 4 goals to lead Maine West (19-12).
New Trier (18-9) meets Loyola, a 10-9 winner against Glenbrook North, in Saturday's 11 a.m. sectional final.
