Vernon Hills takes top honors in own sectional

Freshman Jordyn Bunning won three individual events, junior Vivian Overbeck qualified for state in her two distance events, and Vernon Hills' girls track and field team dominated its own Class 2A sectional Friday night.

Bunning captured the pole vault (9 feet, 9 inches) and also finished first in both the 100-(15.33) and 300-meter hurdles (46.96). Overbeck ran to a winning 11:16.58 in the 3,200 run and placed third in the 1,600 run (5:19.80, third). Vernon Hills finished with 101 points, well ahead of runner-up Hampshire (68) and third-place Marengo (64).

Vernon Hills won the 1,600 relay (4:07.94), while its 3,200 (9:47.83, second) and 400 relays (50.56, third) also earned state berths. The Cougars boasted the 800-run winner as well in freshman Lauren Katz (2:19.59). Also making it to state for Vernon Hills were seniors Kasey Firnbach in the discus (123-1, second) and Lauren Kim in the 800 run (2:22.09, third).

Wauconda (sixth, 52 points) will send Christina Meinhardt to state for the fourth year in a row. Meinhardt won both the shot put (39-5) and discus (133-0.5). Her teammate Corrina Vaughan, a junior, also made it to state in both events. Vaughan was second in the shot put (38-5) and fourth in the discus (113-7). Wauconda junior Alison Beeman won the 100 dash (12.59) and finished second in the 400 (59.64).

Antioch had two state qualifiers in juniors Mikayla Christian (discus) and Anna Arden (300 hurdles). Carmel will be represented at state by senior Hasana Huff (triple jump, winning 36-3.25), freshman Aileen Hull (1,600 run) and three relays. The Corsairs won the 400 relay (50.36), placed second in the 1,600 relay and took third in the 800 relay.
