Strong finish lifts Schaumburg

Sixth-seeded Schaumburg pulled out a 9-7 victory over No. 3 seed St. Viator in boys water polo sectional quarterfinal play hosted by the Saxons on Thursday night.

Team captains Jack Pyde, Tyler Gustafson and James Birriel each had fourth-quarter goals as Schaumburg outscored the Lions 4-2 in the period.

Gustafson finished with 4 goals while Pyde had 3 and Birriel 2.

Shea Boyer and Keegan Finn paced St. Viator with 2 goals each.

Goalie Edin Latic turned back 15 shots to helps Schaumburg into Friday's sectional semifinal round.

• Mid-Suburban League champ Barrington topped Elk Grove 17-10 as senior Matt Gouskos led the Broncos with 5 goals.

• Fremd delivered an 11-9 victory over Prospect.

• Conant eliminated Hersey with an 14-4 decision as Connor Schmitz and Braden Lamore scored 5 goals apiece.

Friday's 7 p.m. Schaumburg sectional semifinal will feature MSL champ and top seed Barrington against No. 4 seed Fremd, followed by No. 2 seed Conant vs. No. 6 Schaumburg at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Buffalo Grove sectional: Top-seeded Stevenson ousted Palatine 19-5 and will meet No. 5 McHenry in Friday's 7 p.m. semifinal. McHenry advanced by knocking off No. 4 seed Libertyville.

In the second game at Buffalo Grove on Friday, it will be No. 2 seed Mundelein against Wheeling.

Mundelein handled Highland Park 18-5 on Thursday, while sixth-seeded Wheeling, the Mid-Suburban East champion, pulled out a 12-10 victory over No. 3 seed Lake Forest in overtime.

Glenbrook North sectional: Top-seeded Loyola ended the season for Maine West with a 15-9 victory over the Warriors in Thursday's first matchup. The Ramblers will meet Niles West at 7 p.m. in the semifinals Friday.

New Trier meets Glenbrook South in the 8:15 p.m. matchup Friday.
