Appalled by what happened to horses

I was appalled to read about the possibility of two horses, Annie and Buddy, being sold at auction to possibly a kill buyer.

First of all, they shouldn't have had to ride 160 miles and be stressed out. These beautiful, loyal, gentle animals should have been given a stall and a pasture when they were retired. They have served their "useful" life for the DuPage County Forest Preserve District. All animals should be treated humanely and these two horses were not.

I have always thought of "retirement" as a status you "earn" by working and doing your best. When you retire, you should have an easier, enjoyable life. Did these two horses have that? No. They were hauled away from the home they knew and who knows what horrors they endured.

Shame on you people who made this terrible, despicable decision.
