Bees sting Cougars for 13 runs
The Burlington Bees (16-16) used a big fourth-inning scoring spree to propel them to a 13-6 victory against the Kane County Cougars (14-18) Tuesday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.
Strong winds blowing to right field all day helped the Cougars launch two home runs in the contest and jump out to a 5-1 lead. After scoring a run in the first inning, Fernery Ozuna lifted a fly ball to deep right center that sailed over the wall, putting the Cougars ahead 3-0. One inning later Grant Heyman launched his first blast of the year, bringing home Steve McQuail on a round tripper for a 5-1 advantage.
After three innings from Jeferson Mejia, Jared Miller (2-3) came in to pitch in the top of the fourth inning. The Bees quickly pounced on the Cougar left-hander, sending 12 hitters to the plate in an eight-run frame.
The Bees, who were shutout by the Cougars on Monday, added runs in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings as they paced 19 hits throughout the game. The Cougars only saw the scoreboard once more in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Austin Robichaux (2-2) picked up the win despite allowing five runs in as many innings. Jake Jewell earned his first save of the season tossing the final four frames.
The Cougars look to take an advantage in the series on Wednesday with Hall of Famer Tony La Russa, a member of the Diamondbacks' front office, in attendance. Brad Keller (1-3, 2.91) takes the bump for the Cougars against Burlington's Jeremy Rhoades (3-0, 2.05). First pitch from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
