Linconshire Garden Club joins with women's center in beautification effort

Garden club members and residents dug in the dirt to plant flowers and a vegetable garden at Women's Residential Services in Vernon Hills on Tuesday.

The planting event was organized by the Lincolnshire Garden Club over a two-day period with about 20 club members, residents and employees working together to beautify the outdoor area.

"This is the second year that the Lincolnshire Garden Club has sponsored some flowers for them and this year they are doing a vegetable garden," said Judy Jenner, a member of the club. "Last year, they did a great job and took care of it themselves and they called it their secret garden."

The club provided more than $600 in flowers and vegetables, such as tomatoes, basil, green peppers, lavender and cilantro. The Mulch Center donated $200 worth of mulch and dirt.

Women's Residential Services is a residential alcohol/drug rehabilitation service with counseling and parenting education for women and their children.

"I like to see the completed work. It's a positive vibe to come out here. We can come out here and just be in the sun and garden. It's relaxing," said resident Stephanie after potting several colorful petunias.
