Buchholz's big hit lifts Lakes

Brett Buchholz's 2-run double in the top of the sixth snapped a 7-7 tie, as Lakes' baseball team edged host Libertyville 9-7 in a nonconference game Saturday.

Buchholz homered earlier. Matt Nordlund went 3-for-3 with a 3-run homer and walk for Lakes (17-6-1). Buchholz finished 2-for-3 and drove in 4 runs. Zach Fuller recorded the win, as he allowed 1 run over 2⅓ innings.

Riley Lees went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI for Libertyville (16-9). Nick Neumann and Chase Patterson (double) were both 2-for-4. Patterson had a double and 3 RBI.

Mundelein 10, Montini 0: Luke Peterson was 2-for-2 with a triple and double, as the host Mustangs won the nonconference game in five inning to hit the 20-win mark.

Reese Dolan picked up the win. Nick Brune also went 2-for-2 (double, single) for Mundelein (20-7). Reed Rubio was 2-for-3 in the win.

Buffalo Grove 3, Vernon Hills 2: Vernon Hills' Andrew Smith and Buffalo Grove's Adam Apel squared off in a pitchers duel in the nonconference game.

Both Smith and Apel held the opposition scoreless through five innings. Buffalo Grove scored first in the top of the sixth, as 3 hits resulted in 2 runs.

Vernon Hills (16-10) answered in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Robby Nardini (2-for-4), Nick Conrad and Drew Winegardner each singled to load the bases. Nardini scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matt Paszko. The threat ended with Matt Gramins flying out to left field.

The Bison scratched out another run in the seventh.

Vernon Hills threatened in the bottom of the inning. Joey Marras singled to start the frame. After Brennan Reback (2-for-3) flew out to center, Connor McNarmara tripled home courtesy runner Nick Marras. The Cougars scoring ended there, as the next batter struck out looking before a groundout to second base ended the game.

Zion-Benton 5, Antioch 1: Angel Verduzco pitched a complete-game 4-hitter, striking out 11 and walking four, for the Zee-Bees.

John Petty had 2 hits and a walk for Antioch.
