Museum invites visitors to share in Memory Jar Project

"Memory … is the diary that we all carry about with us," Oscar Wilde wrote.

During May - a month filled with remembrances of mothers, veterans and fallen soldiers, and graduates - the Elmhurst Historical Museum is inviting visitors to participate in a community memory project.

The collaborative Elmhurst Memory Jar Project is designed to evoke memories and share family histories with the community during the month of May. Participants will place a personal item that sparks a memory in a Mason jar and write a few lines about the object's significance on the Memory Jar tag.

The museum will provide jars and craft supplies, or participants can bring their own materials and items to include in the jar.

The Memory Jars will be displayed through Sunday, May 31, in the first-floor galley of the Elmhurst Historical Museum, 120 E. Park Ave., Elmhurst. Projects may be viewed from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday; admission is free.

The jars may be collected June 2 and 3 to take home after the exhibit closes. Photos of the jars are posted weekly on Facebook and Instagram (follow @ElmhurstHistory).

The Elmhurst Memory Jar Project is designed to provide an intergenerational history activity for families, schools, graduates, moms and grandparents.
